June was a busy, busy month for me and ReidAboutSex… It was busy mostly because I was decompressing from a month on the road in May (see May’s newsletter), dealing with pesky website virus warnings (my website’s healed now! Hallelujah!), and hitting the road again.

June was two weeks in Oakland, then off to New York City and then Chicago, with a quick wedding stop in between in lovely Akron, Ohio (My first time!). And then -boom!- back to Oakland to finish out the last two days of the month. Whew!

No sooner am I’m back at Fruitopia, my East Bay event space, than it occurs to me that I might not want to unpack. Why? I leave on Monday to teach in Los Angeles for 10-days. But… But…. When I was calendaring this all out, it looked so relaaaaaaxed.

I think it’s time to call Delta or Virgin America to see if they’ll sponsor me… Hehehe… Virgin Airlines, official sponsor of ReidAboutSex? Hmmmm…. Who’s got Sir Branson on their speed-dial?

Apparently, this frustrated feline might have gotten more tail (sorry, couldn’t resist) if they’d listened to my Initiating Successful Threesomes podclass, but who can say for sure, right? It’s taken me forever to get around to editing some of the valuable footage I’ve got sitting in my hard drive. With apologies to the patient pioneer of Sexological Bodywork and founder of the New School for Erotic Touch, Joseph Kramer, for taking months to get this uploading to YouTube, here is Part 1 of what turned out to be an amazing interview. I was deeply honored that Joseph granted me the interview and took time out of his busy schedule to drive into San Fran in hallacious traffic it turns out.*

College Speaking Tour

As many of you who’ve attended my workshops know and can see from the Joseph Kramer interview above, I’ve been dutifully filming footage of everything I’ve been teaching for about a year now. As some of you know, footage doesn’t edit itself! And while I’ve got a long history of working in the film and television world (actor, writer, producer), I’m not the fastest film editor in the West… Heck, I’m not the fastest editor anywhere in the U.S. for that matter!

To make matters worse,  I’ve also been gathering and digitizing lots of old footage of me teaching and being interviewed. I even have a bunch of my old Soap Opera acting gigs and old commercials on disc now (I was an actor, film producer and fight choreographer prior to launching my career as a sex and relationship expert, if you didn’t know).

Here’s the headshot that landed me a McDonalds commercial where I played a… Wait for it… Wait… You guessed it: a hockey player! Just wait till I show you my ESPN2 commercial with me as a Swedish lumberjack! Flannel never looked so sexy…

It’s been a busy month on the road… And I’ve got the pix to prove it!

I swear I was busting my hump the four days I was in the Big Apple; however, my trip home to New York City was nearly entirely filled with Relationship Coaching and Sex Ed Mentoring Clients. The one night I did have a few free hours, I stole away to Brooklyn to a BBQ hosted by the amazingly smart (and cute) sexual civil rights lawyer Diana Adams, Esq., who collaborated with me on the Women Who Give Too Much teleclass series.

After a quick skip to Akron, Ohio, for a wedding, it was back on a plane to the Windy City for…

And so it begins…

It was my first trip to Chicago as a sex and relationship educator and, truth be told, I was a tad nervous…

I was very pleased with how well The Pleasure Chest gigs went. Thursday in Chicago was devoted to Relationship Coaching and Sex Ed Mentoring (and catching up on emails). Friday was devoted to prepping for the two and a half day long Foundations of Facilitation Weekend Training Intensive, which got kicked off by an awesome, 22-person Chicago Cuddle Party! White Sox and Cubs fans cuddling together! Unbelievable!

A client hits a wall with her husband…

My husband and I had hit a wall. We were discussing the possibility of ending our relationship of 7 years. We had gone beyond our skill level in handeling the difficulties that we were facing as a couple. Tax Day, while not so gentle on my wallet, was a huge success to my career as Sarah Sloan and I co-facilitated a special Tax Day edition of Iron Slut Sex Educator Showdown! Prof. James N. Green, Professor of History and Brazilian Studies: James N. Green works on the political, social and, and cultural history of nineteenth and twentieth-century Brazil. His books include: We Cannot Remain Silent: Opposition to the Brazilian Military Dictatorship in the United States(Duke, 2010) and Beyond Carnival: Male Homosexuality in Twentieth-century Brazil (University of Chicago, 1999. He is currently working on a biography of Herbert Daniel, a Brazilian guerrilla leader, political exile, and AIDS activist.

James N. Green received his doctorate in Latin American history at UCLA in 1996. He has traveled extensively throughout Latin America and lived eight years in Brazi. Megan Andelloux: Megan Andelloux is a nationally certified sexuality educator through The American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists and is a board certified sexologist through The American College of Sexologists. She is the founder and director of The Center for Sexual Pleasure and Health, a sexuality resource center located in Pawtucket, RI.

Ms. Andelloux has worked full-time in the field of Sexual Education for more than 12 years.  She is an Instructor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Boston University School of Medicine and lectures internationally at colleges, universities, medical schools, and sexuality institutions on issues surrounding sexual pleasure, sexual health, politics, and erotic justice. She developed the Gynecological Training Program for Boston University School of Medicine, and in addition works as a Gynecological Teaching Associate at medical institutions on the East coast.

Aida Manduley: Aida Esther Manduley ‘11 is a student and sexual freedom activist from Puerto Rico, double-concentrating in Comparative Literature and Gender & Sexuality Studies at Brown University. She volunteers with community organizations and works with a variety of on-campus groups, such as the Queer Alliance and the Sexual Health Education & Empowerment Council (both of which she chairs), to foster diversity and promote awareness of issues pertaining to gender, sex, and sexuality, as well as their varied intersections with other aspects of life and identity (e.g. language and ethnicity). Aside from this work, Aida is also part of the Brown University Activities Council and Zeta Delta Xi, a local co-ed fraternity.

Ricky Gresh: Senior Director for Student Engagement at Brown University, Ricky Gresh provides leadership to divisional efforts to facilitate opportunities for student engagement including the Campus Life Diversity centers and the Stephen Robert Campus Center. Ricky also serves as a liaison to the Office of the Dean of the College and the Graduate School.

It has recently been made painfully obvious to me that my website needs at least a brief history/context of my workshops. Up till now, there’s been little to no explanation. PG, PG13, R-rated, NC17… Those are for movies, not workshops, right? Not anymore.

Does this make me the James Cameron of sex education? I have worn a blue dildo on stage as you’ll see below in the Month In Review. Very Avatar.

Cuddle Parties don’t overtly deal with sex. Nor should they. But what should?

In today’s touch starved culture, Cuddle Party was (and still is) doing a great job of giving people a sunggle-O-licious laboratory to practice the foundational communication skills that make the world safe for touch and affection. And the world could stand to be more cuddle-friendly.

Skills like asking for what you want, the ability to change one’s mind (and communicate it), and being able to say No without feeling guilty are just as important when you’re naked between the sheets as when you and your friends are pajama-clad, hug-deep in a puppy pile. And while Cuddle Party is an amazing, interactive experience where people become better communicators of their needs and boundaries and learn how to create more affection and nurturing touch in their lives, I had nowhere of my own to send people who wanted to increase their sexual confidence in a more direct manner.

Let’s face it, the communication needs are similar, but spooning isn’t the same as forking…

The Month in Review….

February was a busy, busy month!

I traveled home to the East Coast after several long weeks away and lead a slew of workshops in New York City. It was almost Valentine’s, which is the “busy season” when you’re a sex and relationship educator. Singles Only Cuddle Party? Check. Romance For The Rest of Us workshop? Check…. This year I added a spiritual talk on relationships called Relationships: The Reality and The Illusion, that I co-lead with esteemed yoga teacher and spiritual seeker Paula Tursi.

For Valentine’s Day, Cupid sent me back to my old college stomping grounds!

I trekked North up to Providence, Rhode Island, to teach my Sex Educator Showdown with RI’s favorite hometown sex educator, Megan Andeloux. It would mark my 20th year re-visit to my Alma Mater, Brown University. Oh, what a blast THAT was, teaching to 225+ Brown students!

I bolted back down to the Big Apple to teach another well-attended The Ins and Outs of Hand Sex with Amy Jo Goddard at NYC’s Sexy Spirits (In September, Richard Anton Diaz, founder of Sexy Spirits, and I will be hosting the 2nd Annual Sacred Sexuality Round-Up in Times Square, so keep an eye out for announcements!).

I would pack up my belongings once again and head West to interview the legendary “father of sexological bodywork,” Joseph Kramer, at San Francisco’s historic Center for Sex and Culture.

I closed out a busy February co-leading the Foundations of Facilitation weekend intensive with Cuddle Party co-founder Marcia Baczynski. For those of you who missed the FoF in Oakland, I’ll be leading Foundations of Facilitation and a slew of other workshops in Chicago this June. Why don’cha join me?!

After that, to kick-off March, I had the great pleasure to help one of my favorite community causes, the Burning Man Art Festival’s largest queer women’s theme camp, Camp Beaverton for Wayward Girls, raise funds for their trek to the desert this September. Not only was it a complete blast, I had so much fun that I gave myself a humongous cold and spent most of the following two weeks triangulating my bed, my computer, and my coffee maker!

Now, nearly fully recovered, the March Newsletter  is out and I’m off to posting all of the amazing workshops I’ve got scheduled for the next 6-to-8 weeks…

I’ve got a FREE teleclass on Sex Magic to kick-off Kamala Devi’s East Bay visit to my East Bay event space, Fruitopia! Just because some folks can’t make it to Oakland for the weekend of events doesn’t mean they should be denied Kamala, right? So I created a teleclass anyone could dial-in to or download later.

Kamala Devi, my cohort in my first educational DVD on relationships (see below) will be arriving to the East Bay and going head-to-head with me in my Iron Slut Sex Educator Showdown as well as the East Bay, Ninja-themed launch of our DVD and a day in our Relationship Dojo and Play Party “Lab” working on Jealousy. The National Polyamory Leadership Group is a collaborative group of polyamory community leaders from around the U.S. who have come together to carry the polyamory movement forward. The group advocates for the interests of all who self-identify as polyamorous regardless of age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation or political point of view.

The intention of this year’s leadership summit is:

• To honor and improve on what we’ve accomplished in the last two years.
• To rejuvenate ourselves.
• To deepen our connections and bonds with other poly leaders.
• To help the poly and poly-curious find support and resources!

All participants, for this summit are expected to commit to the following:

• To show up ready to work, connect, and frolic.
• To say No when you are a No, Yes when you are a Yes, and No when you are a Maybe.
• To contribute –if you’re a Yes- what you do best to the group.
• To take on nothing that you aren’t already good at.
• To take on nothing that you aren’t excited and inspired by.
• To collaborate with others in an honest and productive manner, which includes keeping conflict to a minimum and avoiding it entirely whenever possible, as well as not placing personal agendas ahead of these two inquires during the summit: How can we better help poly people? How can we better help poly-curious folk?

If these intentions do not excite you, or you cannot agree to the above expectations, Reid respectfully asks that you not attend this year’s leadership summit.
